About the Event:
York University is renowned for its expertise in the study of migration and diaspora histories and experiences in Canada, with major research programs on Greek, Italian, Black/African descent, Portuguese, Jewish, Irish, Egyptian, Francophone, Korean, Filipinx and other communities. Much of this work has been done in close collaboration between these communities, the Clara Thomas Archives & Special Collections, and other units at York.
Thanks to the relationship building work that numerous faculty and graduate students have done over many years, York now holds major archival collections that have supported research, teaching, and knowledge mobilization initiatives in and outside of academia. York is soon to host the extensive archives of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario (MHSO), which will solidify its position as a leading institution for the study of migration, ethnicity, and diasporas in Canada. The Archives of Ontario is also now on York’s campus, and maintains close ties with our faculty for research and teaching.
This roundtable will gather leading researchers and archivists either working at, or in fruitful partnership with York, who are all committed to democratizing access to the archival records of migrant and diasporic communities in Canada in ways that acknowledge and listen to the myriad voices within them.
The discussion will be a collective reflection on the value of this work, and how it can be done successfully. How to gather community records and build archives; how to make records accessible to local communities and enable them to collaborate equitably in the production of new media to support their own priorities; and how to share authority in the use and exhibition of archival materials, while ensuring lasting accessibility for future generations.

Carrie-Ann Smith est titulaire d’une maîtrise en bibliothéconomie et sciences de l’information de l’Université Dalhousie à Halifax. Elle est devenue membre de la Pier 21 Society à l’été 1998 et occupe actuellement le poste de Device-President, Public Engagement Officer au Musée canadien de l’immigration du Quai 21. Mme Smith (ne vous fiez pas à son nom de famille) est un descendant de Federico et Mabli Artuso de San Martino di Lupari; elle a écrit une histoire sur sa vie de jeune italo-canadienne grandissant à Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, paru dans Mamma Mia: Good Italian Girls Talk Back (ECW Press). L’objectif de Mme Smith de travailler au Musée, qui est d’aider à recueillir, préserver et faire connaître les souvenirs des immigrants qui sont venus au Canada, la motive également à contribuer au travail de l’ICAP.
Sandra Parmegiani enseigne les études italiennes et européennes à l’Université de Guelph et a été présidente de la Société canadienne d’études italiennes (juin 2014 à juin 2017). Dans le passé, elle a enseigné la littérature et la langue italiennes au Trinity College de Dublin (Irlande) et à l’Université de Western Ontario. Ses recherches portent sur la littérature et la culture italiennes du XVIIIe siècle et de la période contemporaine. Depuis 2013, grâce à une bourse obtenue de Mitacs, elle encadre des travaux postdoctoraux sur la cartographie des ressources culturelles immatérielles par l’analyse de la culture de la lecture.
