Goose Village: Kinship and Cultural Heritage
The Italian-Canadian Archives of Quebec is pleased to announce our latest event as part of our ongoing series, Archives Out Loud, on November 15, 2024, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Casa d’Italia, 505 Jean-Talon east. Video of the event will be available on our Facebook page after the fact.
The Goose Village was a neighbourhood in Montreal’s present-day Southwest borough. In 1964, in preparation for Expo 67, its largely Italian-Canadian community was displaced as their neighbourhood was completely demolished to be replaced by a parking lot and football stadium. Learn about the history of the Goose Village through photography, creative writing, and family stories. Our speakers include:
Marisa Portolese, Canadian-Italian, visual artist from Montreal, Quebec. She is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia University and has recently published the monograph Goose Village (2023).
Hope Diorio, retired CEGEP teacher in General Education at Lasalle College in Montreal. She is fiercely proud to have been born and raised in the Goose Village with her siblings.
Christopher DiRaddo, author of the novels The Family Way (2021), shortlisted for the F.G Bressani Literary Prize, and The Geography of Pluto (2014). He is currently working on a new project inspired by the Goose Village.
The presentations will be in Italian and English. The discussion and Q&A session will be in Italian, English, and French. Archives Out Loud is open to the public without charge. Wine and cheese will follow the readings and discussion.
