ITALIAN-CANADIAN ACTORS WANTED!

Are you
• a social justice activist?
• a labour/union supporter?
• a lover of community theatre? and
• a male-identifying Italian Canadian?

Then the TORONTO WORKERS’ THEATRE GROUP wants YOU!!!

We are an enthusiastic group of volunteers who, over the past seven years, have produced short plays about the history of Toronto working people, for the Toronto Workers History Project. (See: https://twhp.ca/theatre-group/ ) Creating and staging our plays is a collective process that brings together a rich diversity of writing, directing, and acting experience. In our performances the group aims at engaging and involving the audience to bring to life some dramatic moments in Toronto labour history.

In spring 2025, we will produce Basta! No More Fear, a play about the Hogg’s Hollow disaster of 1960. Five Italian-Canadian construction workers digging a water main project under the Don River were killed when fire broke out. The coroner’s inquest delivered a scathing indictment of the construction company’s lack of adequate safety precautions. Outrage in Toronto’s Italian community about how their countrymen were being treated on the job helped to fuel an organizing campaign among residential construction workers. The disaster and subsequent activism created provincial labour laws to provide better safety on the job.

After script development sessions with labour historians Craig Heron, Franca Iacovetta and Gilberto Fernandes, we are preparing to cast and rehearse our new play. We are looking for young male actor/activists to play Italian-Canadian construction workers.

No acting experience necessary. Great fun. Contact Community Arts Director Aida Jordão at jordaoaida@gmail.com
